Understanding the Street Layout of Melbourne’s Chinatown as an Urban Heritage Precinct in a Grid System Using Space Syntax Methods and Field Observation

Melbourne’s Chinatown is the oldest in Australia. A large amount of research on this unique ethnic enclave has been conducted to elucidate its formation history, heritage significance, cultural influence and architectural features. However, discussion precinct’s spatial characteristics remains mostly marginalised. As a precinct centre an urban grid form, offers experience visitors. To better fathom street layout area, three objectives are addressed study, including understanding: (1) network system, (2) visibility relationship within (3) between buildings streets. joint methodology framework established fulfil by incorporating space syntax methods field observation. The findings facilitate policymakers planners understanding making relevant preservation decisions. Further studies encouraged scrutinise other test proposed methodology.
